Can Stress Cause Acne?

By Daryl Chapman

People deal with everyday stresses. But is really a link that exists between adult acne development and stress? In 2003, a Stanford University study published in the Archives of Dermatology discovered that students had pimples flare-ups during exams. During examinations, students are under so much stress. The researchers concluded that pimples severity is linked to intensifying stress.

Even now, experts are clueless on how stress worsens acne. What they know is when stress hormones are triggered, the sebaceous gland produces more sebum. Sebum when mixed with dead skin cells and microorganisms can cause the hair follicles to become clogged, thus leading to inflammation, a pimple or acne cyst.

Deep Breathing

If you are like many people who are experiencing pimples whenever under severe stress, there are several ways to minimize acne. Breathing exercises is one of them. The key to deep breathing is to breathe deeply from the abdomen. Get as much fresh air as possible inside your lungs.

Mindfulness Meditation

According to helpguide.org, meditations that encourage mindfulness is used for many years to reduce overwhelming stress. When meditating, it is important to pick a secluded place like your home office, backyard, place of worship or any space where you can relax without distractions or interruptions. Assign a point of focus. Choose an object that will enhance your concentration.

Facial Routine

Another way is to wash the face regularly. As not to leave your skin dry, wash your face twice daily. Using exfoliating creams and home microdermabrasion kits are also recommended by experts to allow fresh skin to grow. In spite of this, take caution to use these products because wrong applications can only worsen the acne.

Do Not Prick Pimples

People squeeze on their pimples because they are under severe stress and seeing a forming zit on their cheek or brow can add to the stress that they are experiencing. However, pricking is inadvisable because the dirt from the nails can transfer to the inflamed skin, causing more harm than good.

Divert Attention

If you are strained and are always looking through a mirror, the tendency is you will do anything to get rid of the pimple. You will either prick them or do something that you will regret. Use diversion to take your mind off your pimples. You can read a book or play video games. Do not look at the mirror to avoid temptation of pricking your blemishes. Sleep if you do not have any plans or things to preoccupy yourself with.

According to studies, when a person is under severe stress, acne and blemishes can worsen. Above are excellent ways to help relieve stress and to minimize pimples. Stress is necessary in life. It can only lead to destruction when it becomes difficult to bear and interrupts your everyday living.
